Tyson Fury says negotiations for a December fight with WBC champion Deontay Wilder are “very close to being done”.
Fury, 29, returned to the ring after more than two years away with a stoppage victory over Sefer Seferi in June and is next scheduled to take on Francesco Pianeta at Belfast’s Windsor Park on August 18.
Should Fury come through that fight unscathed, the former heavyweight champion says he will take on American Wilder who had previously been in talks for a unification bout with Anthony Joshua.
Speaking on his Twitter account Fury said: “I can confirm that me and Deontay Wilder are in negotiations. [It is] very close to being done. I can reveal that negotiations have been very strong for December.”
“We are almost done with this deal. But I won’t be looking over Francesco Pianeta. He is going to give me the right fight and the right work to prepare me for Wilder.”
Wilder, undefeated in 40 fights with 39 knockouts, has also been vocal in his confidence that the fight will happen. He said: “It’s definitely gonna happen, there’s no doubt. There’s just a little more work to be done. “
“Tyson Fury, in many eyes, is still the champ, he hasn’t been defeated. He’s still undefeated. He’s still the lineal champion. Once I knock him off, I become that man who beat the man.”
Fury, 26-0, looks likely to have to travel for the fight with venues in New York and Las Vegas being considered and Wilder has promised fireworks. He added: “It’s going to be a helluva fight, this guy’s not scared, he’s coming to America to fight in my house.”
